JD McPherson

Friday, July 26, 2013

“”There is a reason why the best radio stations across the country can’t stop playing McPherson’s debut full-length. McPherson and Company’s brand of rockabilly – a mix of Sun Records rock n’ roll, Chicago blues, and Motown soul – is an inspired return to the raucous music that birthed everything worthwhile we hear today.

McPherson, an Oklahoma-native, originally set his sights on a career in visual arts, but decided to pursue music full-time. After joining forces with producer Jimmy Sutton – who also plays bass and sings back-up in McPherson’s band – the two began crafting songs that would be an authentic addition to the music styles they grew up loving. The album they produced, Signs & Signifiers, made an immediate impact on audiences. And while songs like ‘North Side Gal,’ ‘Fire Bug,’ and ‘A Gentle Awakening’ sound fantastic on record, McPherson’s music is perhaps best experienced live.

There is nothing like dancing with a pretty girl in the summer sun while precision musicians put everything they’ve got into playing rock n’ soul like it should be. Imagine if Eddie Cochran and Solomon Burke played a set together, and you’ll realize why JD McPherson was meant to play Newport Folk Festival.” ”
