HOUNDMOUTH
Saturday, July 27, 2013
“Houndmouth is a four-piece band featuring Katie Toupin, Matt Myers, Zak Appleby, and Shane Cody. The band’s name originated from a nighttime recording session at Shane’s house, choosing the evening to remove the sounds of sirens and car honks. When they played the tracks back, they could hear the neighbor’s dogs barking in the background. Shane said it wasn’t going to work because the recordings contained too much houndmouth. A name and an honest sound were born.
Formed in late 2011 in Southern Indiana, the band currently has a four-song EP, and are planning to release a full-length album in 2013. Their music is real and raw. Whether it’s Katie’s vocals on “Houston Train”, the beautiful country gospel harmonies of “Krampus”, or the soulful guitar on “Penitentiary”, the natural music and vocals blend together and work well.
I saw them play at the Brighton Music Hall this past September, and I can honestly say that these newcomers are an excellent addition to the Folk Family. Growing up in Indiana, I’m excited to introduce Houndmouth and welcome them to the 2013 Newport Folk Festival. I have no doubt they will be embraced, and the best for them is yet to come.”
