RAYLAND BAXTER
Saturday, July 27, 2013
“I first saw Rayland play on a Sunday night in a bar just outside of Boston. A crowd formed near the stage as his guitar subtly drowned out the typical barroom chatter. As the set unfolded, the room became more and more enthralled- Rayland’s talent as a guitarist and songwriter is clearly evident in the imagery and emotion expressed through his songs. At first glance, Rayland is a typical twenty-something up-and-commer in the Nashville scene, but his life experiences have set his songwriting apart. From touring the country in a 1969 Plymouth Valiant to being a guitar tech in Paris, Rayland personifies what it means to be a modern ‘troubadour’. Growing up with musical parents certainly didn’t hurt (you can hear Rayland’s Dad, Bucky Baxter on slide guitar in his album feathers & fishHooks). But more importantly, the communal approach Rayland takes towards recording with friends is a trait that will translate well as collaboration is the vital heartbeat of Newport Folk.

Watching Rayland cradle his guitar and share his songs that Sunday night was like being let in on a great secret. After his set, he thanked the crowd, ‘my manager says these small shows are just as important as the big ones… so thank you all for listening.’ I’m glad I listened, and I’m even happier to introduce Rayland Baxter to the 2013 lineup. WeLcome to the foLk famiLy, RayLand.”
