“It’s a shorter road than you might think from New Orleans to Newport when you’re talking about live music and the festival experience. Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals and New Orleans Jazz Fest were not only both founded by the legendary George Wein, but both have been creating historic live music experiences for decades, and each is a true haven for fans of authentic music of all kinds.
So I am happy and proud to introduce Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue to Newport.
Trombone Shorty, aka Troy Andrews, hails from the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans and was leading brass bands by the time he was 7. He earned his nickname when he was 4, marching in a parade carrying a trombone bigger than he was. Now at 27 he’s already had a remarkable career, with rave reviews from folks like Beck and Lenny Kravitz. He’s been featured in HBO’s ‘Treme’ and has toured the world playing what he calls “supafunkrock” — a blend of sounds and style as rich and varied as his hometown. It’s a true party on stage and is guaranteed to be a dance-fest for us out in the crowd.
It’s amazing how Newport has become a centerpiece of the festival season for me and many other New Yorkers — this will be my 20th year. So trade in your crawfish for some clams and let’s let Le Bon Temps Roulé in New England!”
